Situated in Hilton, this pioneering strawbale residence explores an alternative approach to sustainable construction through the use of the G.R.E.B. (Groupe de Recherches Écologiques de la Batture) building technique. As one of the first known applications of this method in Western Australia, the project demonstrates the possibilities of combining natural materials, innovative construction methods, and climate-responsive design.

The home was conceived as a highly efficient and healthy living environment, using the natural insulating properties of strawbale walls to provide excellent thermal comfort throughout the seasons. The G.R.E.B. system creates a durable, breathable wall assembly that supports energy efficiency while maintaining a strong connection to natural building traditions.

Designed with a strong focus on passive performance, the house responds to the local climate through solar orientation, carefully placed openings, and natural ventilation strategies. Winter sun is welcomed into the living spaces, while shading, airflow, and thermal mass assist in maintaining comfort during warmer periods.

A simple palette of natural materials, timber elements, and handcrafted details gives the home a warm and tactile character.
